When Children are Frightened

Comfort them in a manner that will allow them to forget that (disturbing) event.

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah رحمه الله

It is an absolute necessity to protect children from every affair that startles them or scares them, such as loud obnoxious sounds, disturbing images, irritating movements, as they may damage their intellectual capabilities, leaving them incapable of benefiting from their intellects at an older age.

If they do experience such an occurrence, hasten to counteract it. Comfort them in a manner that will allow them to forget that (disturbing) event. They should be allowed to latch on to their mother’s breast at the moment and be breastfed to remove that unpleasant memory. Do not allow them to retain that memory in their minds so that it becomes difficult to remove. Use calm movements until they fall asleep and forget that disturbance.

Do not neglect this affair, as fear and fright will settle in their heart. They will grow up upon that and therefore, it will become difficult to remove it; perhaps impossible to do so.
